Braking Page

The braking load is applied according to braking forces chapter.

The braking force is placed in all design lanes which are considered to be loaded and which are carrying traffic headed in the same direction.

Nominal load per lane- the braking force for single vehicle stopping (FBS) shall be calculated as follows:

In accordance to AASHTO 3.6.4 is the greater of:

- 25% of the axle weights of the design truck/tandem or,

- 5% of the design truck/tandem plus lane load.

Height of application (h)

Define vertical distance from the superstructure surface, default 1.8 m.

Total line load

Calculated as (Nominal Load per Lane*Number of lanes *Multiple presence factor)/bridge length(with begin and end excess length).

Multiple presence factor

In accordance with AASHTO table 3.6.1.1.2-1 modify the vehicular live loads for the probability that vehicular live loads occur together in a fully loaded state.

Nominal Line load per lane

Calculated as Nominal Load per Lane/bridge length(with begin and end excess length).
